Window
wells are those metal or plastic corrugated 1/2 rings (in older
houses concrete and brick boxes were used) that go against houses
where basement windows are located.
They enable the ground/grading
to be built up (as talked about last week) while maintaining clearance
around window.
Typically the proper way
to install a "Window well" is as follows:
- Install deep enough to allow ground in well to be at least 4"-6"
below sill of window.
- Line bottom of well with gravel (preferred).
- Seal both sides of well to house.
- Secure proper domes over wells to keep unwanted entry of water,
snow or any other debris.
- Grade/ground should not go above top lip of well (if necessary
double wells may be needed).
-
Check wells and covers periodically for condition.
This is a key item
to the prevention/minimizing of water/moisture into basements.
Tune in next week
for "Gutters/Downspouts".
